Amish men's trousers have no zippered fly. Instead — a wide front flap (broadfall).

Construction

Front panel is one piece from waist to crotch. Buttons on both sides. Drops down entirely. Looks like sailor pants from the 18th-19th century — because that's how everyone dressed before the fly was invented.

Why

The zipper is a 20th century invention. The Amish stopped at technologies before a certain date. Zipper = progress = worldly. But mainly — buttons don't break. Zippers jam, break, need replacement. Sew a button — and forget.

Sewing

Fabric: dark cotton or polyester-cotton (some communities allow). Color: black (church), dark blue or brown (work). No pleats, no creases, no decoration.

Suspenders

Trousers without belt — suspenders only. Suspender buttons sewn to waistband.
