Buttons on men's clothing are forbidden in most Amish communities. Not a whim — a principle.

Why

Buttons are associated with military uniforms. The Amish are pacifists, refusing military service since the 1600s. Buttons became a worldly symbol. Women's dress buttons are allowed (no military association).

Alternative

Hook and eye closures. Metal hooks on one side, eyes on the other. Fasten as quickly as buttons. Less visible — clothing looks seamless.

Pins

Women's aprons and shawls are held with straight pins (not safety pins). This too is tradition — each community decides.

Practicality

Hooks don't tear off like buttons. Don't get lost. If broken — replace in seconds. Easier than sewing a button.
