Every Amish woman wears a head covering (kapp/prayer covering) — always, except sleeping.

Meaning

Bible (1 Corinthians 11:5): a woman should cover her head during prayer. The Amish pray throughout the day — so the covering is constant. Not submission — faith. Amish women explain: 'I wear it for God, not my husband.'

Types

White: married women. Heart-shaped, organdy or batiste. Ties (sometimes) under chin. Black: unmarried girls (in some communities). Size and shape: vary by community — you can tell someone's district by their kapp.

Making

Fabric (white batiste or organdy). Pattern passed from mother. Starch for shape. Hand assembly. Every woman has 3-4 kapps. Washes and starches weekly.

Hair

Under the kapp, hair is in a bun. Amish women never cut their hair — Bible (1 Cor. 11:15): long hair is a woman's glory.
