Amish don't wash by hand (well, Swartzentruber do). Most communities: washing machine with gas motor. Model: roughly 1920s design. Forever.

How It Works

Tub with agitator. Gas motor (small, quiet). Wringer rollers (manual — turn handle, clothes pass between rollers, water drains). Drying: clothesline outside (winter — in attic).

Why Not Automatic

Automatic washer: connected to grid + plumbing. Gas machine: autonomous. Plus: automatic does everything itself — breeds laziness. Gas machine requires work: load, watch, wring, hang. Work = virtue.
