September 11, 2001. The world watched live. Amish didn't (no TV). Don't read newspapers (usually). No radio.
Jacob learned on September 13. English neighbor (Tom, Tom again) came: 'Did you hear? Towers. Planes. Thousands dead.' Jacob hadn't heard. Listened. Silently.
Reaction
Community prayed. For the dead. For families. For enemies (yes, for terrorists too — 'love your enemies'). Didn't discuss politics. Didn't demand war. Didn't hang flags (Amish don't pledge to flags — only to God).
Tom: 'Aren't you angry?' Jacob: 'Anger is poison. For the one who's angry. Not for the one they're angry at.' Tom: 'But they killed 3,000 people!' Jacob: 'And we'll kill 3,000 in return? And they'll kill 3,000 in return for our return? Where does it end?' Tom was silent. Didn't agree. But remembered.
