September is peak. Corn dry (15% moisture — check with thumbnail: no dent remains — ready). Pumpkins orange. Apples red.

Corn

Cut stalks. Stand in shocks (cones of stalks, drying in the field). Two weeks later — thresh. Hand or horse-powered thresher. Grain to barn. Stalks to livestock feed.

Abundance

September-October is the only time the Amish cellar is full. 600 jars. 50 sacks of grain. 20 bushels of apples. 10 pumpkins. 200 kg potatoes. Supply until May. If enough — good year. If not — community helps.
