A buggy is main Amish transport. Costs $5,000-8,000 new, lasts 20-30 years with proper care.

Wheels

Rubber tires on steel rims. Check wear, replace every 3-5 years. Grease bearings every 6 months. Tighten spokes — loose spoke = broken wheel while moving.

Brakes

Disc or drum (like a car). Check pads monthly — downhill without brakes, the horse can't hold. Most dangerous failure.

Body

Wood + fiberglass or leather. Varnish or paint annually. Store under cover — sun and rain deteriorate.

Springs

Leaf springs like a truck. Lubricate with graphite grease. Broken leaf — replace immediately (buggy tilts, harder on horse).

Winter

Some communities switch wheels for runners. Others drive on wheels in snow (rubber grips). Lanterns — mandatory (state law).
