Lancaster County, Pennsylvania is the fifth most-visited region in America. 8+ million tourists yearly. They come to watch the Amish.
Industry
Hotels, 'Amish kitchen' restaurants (not Amish-run), 'Amish goods' shops (90% Chinese imports), buggy tours (often Mennonite, not Amish), 'Amish villages' (reconstructions). Revenue: $2+ billion/year. Almost all goes to 'English.'
What Amish Get
Market sales: furniture, baked goods, quilts, vegetables. These are real Amish goods. $200-500M/year. But a fraction of $2B.
Problems
Photography (Amish consider photos a violation of 'make no graven image'). Privacy invasion. Tour buses on narrow roads (dangerous for buggies). Land bought for hotels (prices rise, farmers can't afford).
Attitude
Patience. Amish don't protest, don't complain publicly, don't hire PR agencies. Just live. Some put up higher fences. Some moved to less touristy states. Most endure, because Gelassenheit teaches acceptance.
