The most common misconceptions about the Amish — and the truth.

'Stuck in the Past'

No. They consciously choose which technologies to use. Gas refrigerators, pneumatic tools, solar panels — they have these. They're not AGAINST progress — they're AGAINST mindless adoption.

'Unhappy, Oppressed'

Research shows: Amish life satisfaction levels are among the highest in America. Depression 5x lower. Suicide 10x rarer. They're not unhappy — just quiet.

'Inbreeding'

Partially true: 200 founders — small gene pool. Specific genetic disorders exist. But: Amish know about the problem and deliberately exchange people between communities. Strasburg Clinic (specializing in Amish genetic diseases) has operated since the 1990s.

'No Sense of Humor'

Absolutely false. Amish humor is dry, self-deprecating, often about horses and neighbors. 'Why did God create the Amish? So horses wouldn't go extinct.'

'Can't Leave'

Can. At any time before baptism — no consequences. After baptism — Meidung (shunning), but even that's reversible. 10-15% leave. The rest stay voluntarily.
