The Amish don't go to church. Church comes to them — every two weeks, rotating through each home.

Location

Living room, kitchen, barn — any large space. Furniture removed. Wooden benches set up (bench wagon — special buggy carrying benches, travels house to house). 30-40 families = 100-150 people.

Format

3-3.5 hours. Start: 8-9 AM. Hymns from Ausbund (slow, a cappella). Two sermons (20-40 minutes each). Bible reading. Prayer (kneeling, silent). Men and women sit separately. Children with mothers (until ~8), then by gender.

Preachers

Not professional — chosen by community by lot (literally: draw a slip from a Bible). Receive no salary. Farm like everyone. Preach without preparation — 'as God moves.' No notes.

After

Communal lunch. Same benches → tables. Bread, butter, jam, cheese, pickled beets, coffee, pie. Simple, identical every time. Conversation: who's marrying, whose cow calved, does anyone need help with a roof. Social fabric woven at the table.
