Indoor plumbing (hand-pump well). Indoor toilet (outhouse). Linoleum and rugs (bare wood floor). Reflectors and lanterns on buggy (conflict with law — hundreds of arrests). Insulated buggy. Window curtains. Bicycles. Roller skates. Rubber tires on buggy (steel only).
Why
Every convenience is a step toward worldly comfort. Comfort → relaxation → departure from God. Linoleum is easier to clean → woman spends less time working → more free time → idleness → sin. Logic is harsh but consistent.
Legal Conflicts
Reflectors and SMV (Slow Moving Vehicle) triangle: law requires them, Swartzentruber refuse (triangle = worldly symbol, bright color = vanity). Dozens of Amish jailed. Some states made exceptions.
Numbers
~18,000. Mostly Ohio. Growing (high birth rate, youth retention ~90%). Many other Amish consider them fanatics. They consider everyone else too worldly.
