Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is the second most important plant in Amish medicine after chamomile. Menthol is its active compound.

Tea

Pour boiling water over fresh or dried leaves, steep 5–7 minutes. For nausea, bloating, intestinal cramps. Relaxes smooth GI muscles. For colds — steam from hot mint tea clears the nose.

Oil

Peppermint essential oil — apply to temples for headache (dilute 1:3 with carrier oil). Rub sore muscles. Drop on a handkerchief and inhale for congestion.

Toothache

Press a crushed mint leaf against the aching tooth. Menthol is a local anesthetic. Doesn't fix the cause but relieves pain until the dentist.

Growing

Mint is invasive. Plant in a separate container or it'll take over the garden. Grows in shade, in moisture, practically unkillable. One bush supplies a family for a year.
