The Amish celebrate the same holidays as other Christians. But differently.
Christmas
No tree (pagan symbol). No Santa (commercialism). No trinket gifts. Gifts: practical (tools, fabric, books) or sweets (candy, nuts, oranges — for children). Main event: family dinner, church service, quiet. Two days off: December 25 and 26.
Easter
No bunny. No chocolate eggs. Two days: Good Friday and Easter Monday. Service. Reflection on Christ's sacrifice. Food: colored eggs (natural dyes — onion skin, beet). Children hunt hidden eggs — the only 'game.'
Thanksgiving
The most 'real' holiday. Gratitude for harvest — not metaphor but literal. Turkey (own), mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce. Family. Silence. Gratitude for what is.
What's Missing
Halloween (occultism). Valentine's Day (commercialism). July 4th (Amish don't celebrate patriotic holidays — they don't participate in the state). No parties, fireworks, or decorations.
