Not everything in the Amish world is perfect. Domestic abuse exists. And is hidden better than anywhere.
Why It's Hidden
Divorce impossible. Police are outsiders (not called). Community — 'reconcile, pray, forgive.' Woman without education or money — nowhere to go. Meidung — if she leaves, loses children, family, everything.
Scale
Little data (Amish don't participate in surveys). Advocacy organizations estimate: 5-10% of families — comparable to general American level. Difference: in America there are shelters, hotlines, laws. Among Amish — community that doesn't always protect the victim.
What's Changing
Slowly. Some communities began addressing the issue (after cases in the press). Some bishops shun aggressors (used to be 'reconcile'). But the road is long. And dark.
