Fire: community rebuilds the house in 1-2 days (barn raising). Materials — everyone chips in. Illness: hospital bill split among community families. $50,000 surgery ÷ 100 families = $500 each. Old age: children support parents. Separate cottage (dawdy haus) on the property. Breadwinner's death: community supports widow and children.
Alms Fund
Every community has a common fund (alms). Funded by voluntary contributions. Covers unexpected expenses. No minimum — each gives what they can.
Medical
The Amish negotiate with hospitals. Pay cash — get 30-60% discount (hospitals love cash: no insurance bureaucracy). $50,000 surgery becomes $20,000. + community helps.
Why It Works
Small community (20-40 families). Everyone knows everyone. Social pressure: not helping is shameful. Not abusing is too.
