Mud Sales are spring charity auctions in Amish country. March-April, snow melts, mud knee-deep — hence the name.

What's Sold

Everything: farm equipment, hand tools, furniture, antiques, quilts, livestock, buggies, houseplants, baked goods. Hundreds of lots per day. Multiple auctioneers simultaneously.

Purpose

Fundraising for volunteer fire companies. The Amish don't pay insurance — the community fights fires itself. Mud Sales fund equipment and training.

Prices

30-70% below market. Tools: $5-50. Furniture: $50-500. Handmade quilts: $200-2,000 (collector value). Antiques: unpredictable — find an 1800s piece for $20.

Atmosphere

Amish and English (what they call all non-Amish) together. Food: BBQ, donuts, shoofly pie. Mud: rubber boots mandatory. Cash: no cards accepted.
