Sharpening
A dull tool is more dangerous than sharp — it slips. Axe: sharpen on a wet stone (not dry — overheating kills temper). Angle 25–30°. Knife: 15–20°. Chisel: 25°. Saw: set teeth + sharpen with a special file.
Rust Protection
After work — wipe metal with an oiled rag. Camellia oil, linseed oil, or even sunflower — whatever's available. Thin coat — wipe, don't drip.
Handles
Wood dries out — treat with linseed oil once a season. Cracked — replace. The Amish make handles from hickory (strongest wood) or ash. A hickory handle lasts 20+ years.
Storage
Dry place, not on the ground (moisture). Every tool in its spot — saves time and protects edges. The Amish can find any tool in a dark workshop by feel.
