Reading, writing, arithmetic — three pillars. German (Pennsylvania Dutch — native, High German — for Bible). English (for communicating with 'English' people and business). Geography and history — basic. Science — no (evolution contradicts faith). PE — outdoor recess. Art — no.
Schedule
8:30 — 3:30. Morning prayer and hymn. Older help younger (multi-age teaching). Homework: little (need to work at home). Holidays: summer + harvest + religious holidays.
After School
Boys: to farm or workshop as apprentice. Girls: housekeeping or nanny. College: no (forbidden). This is enough for Amish life — and has been for 300 years.
