A springhouse is a small building over a spring. Cold spring water (6–10°C) cools food as well as a fridge.

Construction

Stone or concrete walls. Roof for shade. Inside — a shallow basin or channel where spring water flows. Jars and crocks sit directly in the water.

What They Store

Milk — up to 3 days. Butter — a week. Cheese — months. Meat — 2–3 days. Fruits and vegetables — longer than room temperature. Water temperature is stable year-round — doesn't freeze in winter, doesn't warm in summer.

Advantages

Zero energy. Runs 24/7/365. Doesn't break. Flowing water means no odor buildup (unlike a fridge). Built once — serves generations.

Requirements

Needs a spring with constant flow. Not every farm has one — it's a bonus, not a given. The Amish value land with a spring higher — and pay more for it.
