The first Amish homes in America were log cabins. The technique hasn't changed in 300 years.

Log Preparation

Fell in winter — less sap, fewer insects, lighter wood. Debark immediately. Dry 6–12 months under cover. Diameter 25–35 cm. Straight, no rot or large knots.

Corner Notching

Saddle notch: a half-round groove cut in the lower log, the upper log sits in it. Dovetail: a flaring wedge-shaped joint — self-tightening, can't be pulled out. Each corner is custom-fitted — no two are alike.

Chinking

Between logs — moss, oakum, or clay mix. Seals gaps from wind and moisture. Refresh every 3–5 years as material shrinks and falls out.

Settling

The first year, a cabin settles 5–7% in height. Windows and doors are set with a gap above. Not fixed rigidly — or the frame cracks. After a year — final adjustment.
