Amish young people meet at church singings — Sunday evening hymn sessions for youth. The only community-approved 'social event.'

Courting

A boy drives a girl home after singing in his buggy. This is the equivalent of 'asking on a date.' If she agrees — they're 'going together' (courting). Secretly. Parents know but pretend not to. The community knows but doesn't discuss.

Bundling

In some communities — bundling: the boy stays overnight at the girl's home, in one bed, but clothed, with a board between them (or without, but honor is law). Not sex — conversation all night. Getting to know someone without distraction.

Proposal

The boy asks the girl's father. If yes — announced in church two weeks before the wedding. First time the community officially knows.

Wedding

Fall (after harvest, before winter). Tuesday or Thursday (not Saturday — Sabbath, not Sunday). At the bride's home. 200-400 guests. Service 3-4 hours. Bride in a new blue dress (not white). Groom in a new black suit. No rings — jewelry forbidden. Dinner: roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, creamed celery (signature wedding dish), pies.

After

Newlyweds live with bride's parents until spring. Then — their own house. Built themselves, with community help.
