Besides hymns, there are Pennsylvania Dutch songs — folk, everyday, funny. Children sing them at home, during recess, while working.
Examples
'En Liedel' — counting rhyme for choosing 'it' in games. 'Der Bauer' (The Farmer) — listing song: cow, horse, chicken, pig. 'Guck emol naus' (Look Outside) — weather song.
Language in Music
Pennsylvania Dutch is an oral language. No standard spelling. Songs passed orally, like hymns. But faster, with rhythm, with rhymes. Children learn the language through songs before speech.
