Inside an Amish community, money isn't always needed. Bartering — exchanging goods and services — reduces the need for cash.
Examples
Farmer gives milk to neighbor → neighbor fixes his fence. Beekeeper gives honey → receives vegetables. Carpenter builds → receives meat and firewood. Everyone does what they do best.
Why It Works
Small community — everyone knows each other. Reputation matters more than contracts. Cheat someone — the whole community knows, no one will trade with you. Social pressure = quality guarantee.
Advantages
No taxes on barter (within community). No cash needed. Strengthens family bonds. Specialization: everyone develops their skill to the maximum.
Limitations
External purchases (land, materials, medicine) need money. Barter works inside the community, not outside. So the Amish earn money (furniture, sales) for the outside world, and trade within.
