Romantic relationships among the Amish are strictly regulated, but charming in their own way.
How They Meet
At Sunday services (church). At youth evenings (singings) — after service youth sing hymns, then socialize. At work events (barn raising, husking bee). Community is small — everyone knows everyone.
Process
Boy asks permission to drive girl home after singing (in an open courting buggy). If she agrees — that's the start. Dates: Sundays, at her home, supervised (but at a distance). Conversation, board games, walks. No physical contact before engagement.
Bundling
Old tradition (preserved in some communities): couple lies on a bed, clothed, with a board between them or each in their own sack. Purpose — talk all night and get to know each other. Sounds strange, but works.
Engagement
Announced in church 2 weeks before wedding. Until then — secret (though everyone guesses). No engagement rings (jewelry = vanity). Wedding — November-December (harvest in, time available).
