A broom is one of the simplest and most useful things you can make by hand.
Material
Broomcorn (sorghum): special variety grown for its tassels. Cut in September, dried 2-3 weeks. Stems long, flexible, strong. Birch: thin branches bundled — yard broom. Horsehair: for brushes (shoe, clothing).
Process
Soak broomcorn (more flexible). Sort by length. Tie to handle (wood or bamboo) with wire or cord, in layers. Stitch (special awl and cord) — flat shape. Trim even. 30-60 minutes per broom.
Business
Handmade broom: $15-30. Decorative (mini, wedding): $20-50. A maker produces 10-15 brooms daily. Good winter side income. At farmers' markets — sell fast.
