A wattle fence is the cheapest and fastest fence. Material — branches from your property.

Materials

Stakes: straight thick branches or young trunks (hazel, acacia, oak) 1–1.5 meters long. Weavers: flexible branches (willow — best, hazel, birch) 1.5–2 meters long, 2–3 cm thick.

Technique

Drive stakes into ground every 30–40 cm. Weave branches in a serpentine: pass in front of one stake, behind the next. Each row goes in opposite direction. Tamp rows down with a stick. Fence thickness — 10–15 cm.

Uses

Garden fencing against animals. Wind protection for seedlings. Decoration. Small livestock pen. Not for large livestock — not strong enough.

Lifespan

3–7 years depending on wood and climate. Willow — longest (flexible, doesn't break). Birch — shortest (rots faster). Free replacement: cut new branches, weave again.
