Amish farms have zero asphalt. Paths are paved with field-gathered stone.

Preparation

Dig trench 15-20 cm. Compact. Gravel layer 10 cm (drainage). Sand layer 5 cm (bed). Level.

Laying

Select stones flat side up. Press into sand 2/3 deep. Gaps 1-2 cm. Sweep sand into joints, water — sand settles. Top up.

Edging

Large stones at edges, set deeper — hold shape. Without edging, stones spread in 2-3 years.

Advantages

Drainage: water goes through joints, no puddles. Repair: remove one stone, place another. Cost: $0 if stones from field. Aesthetics: every path unique.

Lifespan

Properly laid path — 50-100 years. Asphalt cracks in 10-15.
