The vet is far away and expensive. The Amish handle 90% of horse problems themselves.

Colic

Horse lies down, paws, looks at belly — colic (intestinal pain). First aid: get up, walk 30-60 min (movement stimulates gut). Don't let eat. Warm peppermint tea in water. Belly massage clockwise. If no improvement in 2 hours — vet (could be twisted gut — fatal).

Lameness

Check hoof: stone, nail, crack. Clean with hoof knife. If abscess — warm Epsom salt soak 20 min, twice daily. Bandage with ichthammol ointment. Rest 3-7 days.

Wounds

Flush with clean water. Stop bleeding (pressure bandage). Calendula salve or honey. Bandage. Change daily. Large wounds — vet (needs stitches).

Worms

Prevention: pumpkin seeds (handful in feed daily). Garlic (clove in feed). Diatomaceous earth (food grade). Once yearly — commercial dewormer (the only thing Amish buy from vet supply).
